In Memory

Philip Grover Krug

October 31, 1947 - August 14, 2001

Phil died on August 14, 2001, at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ, at age 53. Born in Newark, Phil was a lifelong resident of Millburn. He was a 1972 graduate of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He was a physical education teacher and coach with the Millburn Board of Education, and since 1980 was the head baseball coach at Millburn High School. Formerly he was an assistant football coach at both Millburn and Summit high schools and taught in the Newark school system.  Phil also served as director of the Millburn Recreation Department and founded the summer "It's a Hit" Baseball Camp for children, which continues to operate.  He also was the founder of the Philip B. Keernan Scholarship Fund in Millburn.  His brother, John A, survived him.  Phil's ashes lie in the columbarium at the Saint Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills, NJ.

On April 7, 2011, the following appeared as part of an article in NorthJersey.com, part of the USA Today Network:  Nearly 10 years have passed since the death of former Millburn High School baseball coach Phil Krug.  An annual tournament in Krug's name has been held since the spring of 2002, and the 10th edition of the event, scheduled for Saturday, April 9, will pay special tribute to a man who guided the Millers to 311 victories, five conference championships, the 1984 Greater Newark Tournament title, and three state sectional crowns in 19 seasons.”

A tribute from fellow University of South Carolina classmate, Joseph Grugan ... "I went to school with Wally at USC from 1966 to our graduation in 1970.  Phillip was a great friend.  I miss him very much."  Thank you, Joseph.  MHS Class of '66 does too.
